TYLER AMONG TOP DIGITAL CITIES

Full Description:

The City of Tyler has again ranked among the top digital cities in the nation, according to the Center for Digital Government’s 2005 Digital Cities survey. Tyler placed 14th out of 51 participants for its extensive and efficient use of technology in daily operations and its ability to deliver quality, state-of-the-art services to citizens.

“We are pleased that Tyler continues to be recognized as a City that is using technology to improve our internal operations and the services we offer our citizens,” Mayor Joey Seeber said.

This year, the City of Tyler introduced several new developments to the public including the complete replacement of all library public access terminals with easily maintained, high-reliability thin client units. The new workstations take full advantage of existing hardware and server equipment while simultaneously reducing a total cost of ownership and, in most cases, are repaired by little more than a reboot when they experience problems. This concept was so successful that it has been expanded to include six new terminals at the City’s Glass Recreation Center and two terminals in the Senior Citizen’s Center.

Tyler was also recognized for the implementation of its inventory tracking system known as the “Tyler Two Step.” The system has improved the efficiency of tracking and maintaining over 700 workstations and related computer peripherals by allowing Information Technology technicians to easily create and update new and existing entries via barcode. These entries include data specifying where these components are installed in addition to their identification, purchasing history, and contract information.

Winners of the recently concluded 2006 Digital Cities survey will be announced in the summer of 2007.
