CITY SUSPENDING LATE-NIGHT BUS SERVICE AT END OF YEAR
Full Description:
Tyler Transit’s late-night service will no longer be available beginning Monday, Jan. 1, 2007.
In November 2005, Tyler Transit began offering trips from 8 p.m. when regular service ended until midnight Monday through Friday. There were also demand response vehicles to help people get where they needed to go.
This service was funded through a $198,000 federal Job Access Reverse Commute (JARC) grant. However, this funding has run out and the City is unable to absorb the estimated $40,000 per month it costs to offer this late-night service. JARC has also shifted from a federal program and the state is attempting to get a new program in place.
“This program basically grew to more than what we had originally anticipated and has exhausted our funding,” Tyler Transit General Manager Norman Schenck said. “This is the burden of success. This program was much more successful than anyone had anticipated.”
Buses will continue to run regular routes until 8 p.m. Monday through Friday. Paratransit buses will still be running to accommodate the disabled.
The City and Tyler Transit will continue to seek funding to reinstate this program in the future.
