Formed in 1959, the Smith County Historical Society is a non-profit 501(c)3 orgranization dedicated to the preservation of Smith County history. Membership is open to all interested parties.
The Society operates a museum and archives called the Carnegie History Center, located at 125 South College Avenue, Tyler, in the old Carnegie Library building. The museum is open Tue.-Sat., 10 am - 4 pm, and the archives are open Wed., 1 pm - 4 pm. Publications and photographs are available for purchase at the museum.
The Society holds a monthly meeting featuring a guest speaker on a Smith County history topic. The meetings are held at the museum at 7:00 pm on the 1st Tuesday of each month and are open and free to the public.
The Society is also the caretaker of the Camp Ford Historical Park, located on Hwy 271 N, north of Loop 323. An annual reenactment on the site is also organized by the Society.
